COMMUNITY/CULTURAL EVENTS...
07/06/08 Project Michelle
Date: Sunday July 6, 2008
Time: 12:00pm-1:30pm
Place: Dallas Chinese Fellowship Church (2640 Glencliff Drive, Plano, TX)
Contact: Bryan Cheng (cell: 917-647-3507) bryan.n.cheng@gmail.com
Michelle Maykin, was diagnosed with Leukemia in February 2007 and is urgent need of a bone marrow transplant.
After multiple rounds of chemotherapy, Michelle was in remission until last month when her cancer heartbreakingly returned.
Please help us find a bone marrow donor match. Michelle is 26-years old and of Chinese/Vietnamese ethnic heritage.
Her match is most likely to come from someone of Asian descent.
In support of her search, her family and friends have created a nationwide campaign called "Project Michelle" (www.projectmichelle.com)
to increase the number of Asians and other minorities registered in the bone marrow registry and to help educate people on the bone marrow donation process.
Many people have misconceptions about the pain and discomfort involved in bone marrow donation.
Medical advances have made the process almost equivalent to giving blood!
Project Michelle's goal is to enroll 15,000 minority registrants as all minority groups are currently underrepresented in the national registry.
To make Project Michelle a success in Dallas, we need your help.
First, please stop by our drive this Sunday (7/6) at Dallas Chinese Fellowship Church in Plano (2640 Glencliff Dr.) starting at 12pm.
If you can't make it this Sunday, please read below on other ways to help!
Things you can do
1. Get Registered!
Getting registered is quick and requires only a simple cheek swab and paperwork (10 minutes of your time).
If you are actually a match, the donation process is very similar to giving blood.
Updates on drives in this area and throughout the country can be found at www.projectmichelle.com/calendar.html
2. Get Involved!
i) Drives are easy to organize, and if you would like to set one up in your community (workplace, church, community center, etc.), I'd be happy to provide all the resources you'll need.
ii) Volunteer at a drive to help walk-thru the registration form and explain the cheek swab. Training volunteers can take just 10-15 minutes.
iii) Or the easiest thing of all - please plug me into the Dallas Asian community (I just moved here!) so that I know what events are going on and where we could set-up a registration table.
3. Learn More!
To learn more, please visit www.projectmichelle.com, read this article from the Houston Chronicle
(www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/fortbend/news/5830385.html), or open this pdf file.
Please help spread the word to your friends about this important cause!
