05/01: White Rock 'N' Roll Run (PACEsetters)
- for Runners and Volunteers
Date: Saturday, May 1
Time: 7:00am (volunteers), 8:00am (runners)
Location: Winfrey Point, White Rock Lake
Coordinator(s): Lily Qian (Run Captain) lily@apexdallas.org,
Angela Lang (Aid Station Volunteers) angela@apexdallas.org
Be among the first to see Winfrey Point's new face lift and at
the same time help improve White Rock Lake. All proceeds goes towards
increasing security lighting around the lake. There will be live
bands at each mile, incredible race packet goodies, and REAL food
at the finish line.
Coordinator: Lily Qian (Run Captain)
The race starts at 8:00 AM, which means that APEX runners will should
arrive at 7:30 AM. It is highly recommended that runners/volunteers
car pool to reduce traffic congestion around the lake. Individuals
will pay their own entry fees. Hopefully, we can register runners
in bulk and therefore have Lily or another run captain pick up the
race packets (April 28 - April 30 @ Luke's Locker Dallas) for everyone.
Angela Lang (Aid Station Volunteers)
We are looking for 10-15 volunteers to help at the White Rock n
Roll Run. Volunteers are needed to monitor the courses and to help
at the water stops. This will allow us the opportunity to do some
service while cheering on our APEX runners.

05/08: Volunteer Opportunity: Asian Festival
Bone Marrow Registry Drive
Date: May 8, 2004
Time: 11am to 6pm
Location : Annette Strauss Square

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to register potential bone marrow and stem cell
donors at the Asian Festival on May 8. Volunteers should try to
arrive at 10am for training, and do not need to stay the entire
day. Please come out and help! Volunteers will be handing out brochures,
and asking people to register as donors.
Over 30,000 children and adults each year, just in the U.S., are
diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as lymphoma or leukemia.
In many of these cases, their only hope for survival is a bone marrow
or blood stem cell transplant. There is national registry of potential
bone marrow donors, where patients can search for a suitable match,
however there is a great shortage of potential donors from ethnic
minorities. Patients searching for a match outside their immediate
family are more likely to find a match from someone in their same
ethnicity or race. As of July 2003, there were only 300,000 donors
of Asian descent registered in the entire United States. The number
of potential Caucasian donors is over 10 times that number.
Also take into consideration the fact that the US National Bone
Marrow Donor Program is the largest and most diverse in the world.
There are only 100,000 registered donors in all of China, less in
other countries in Asia. The chance of Asian patients finding a
match outside their immediate family is incredibly low with the
number of donors available.
Please help increase the numbers of potential donors and improve
the odds! We should do all that we can to help register potential
donors. Donor registry is free for minorities and only requires
a small blood sample (less than two tablespoons) and consent to
be in the registry. Consent to be in the registry is not consent
to be a donor. If a match is made, potential donors need to go through
more tests and they may change their minds at any time.
